Path

From a first Discord bot to professional development.

8 steps between 2018 and today. Each one hides a story, to unfold if you feel like it.

EducationExperienceOngoing

Unfold a step to read the story that goes with it.

  1. 2018

    My first Discord bot

    Personal project · Age 14

I discover programming with a simple goal: to create my own bot. It will eventually be installed on tens of thousands of servers.

    Read the story

Discord is growing rapidly at the time, and bots are gradually becoming fully fledged applications within servers. This first project leads me to discover JavaScript, then Node.js and, more broadly, backend development.

What starts as a personal project becomes a project used on a large scale: as it develops, my bot eventually gets installed on tens of thousands of servers.

I gain early, hands-on experience of what it takes to build an application that people actually use: error handling, deployment, maintenance and ongoing development.

  2. 2020

    From backend to frontend

A dashboard to configure the bot

I want to let everyone configure their bot through a web interface rather than using commands. This need leads me to frontend.

    Read the story

After several years focused mainly on backend development, I want to go further and build a dashboard that lets users configure their bot through a web interface.

I then discover the JavaScript ecosystem for the web and compare several solutions, including Vue.js and React. I choose React for its ecosystem, adoption and already strong position in web development.

I start building applications that combine my backend skills with more advanced web interfaces.

    Discovering Next.js

Frontend and backend in one place

My applications are growing: performance, SEO and architecture are becoming topics in their own right.

    Read the story

As my applications become more substantial, I’m taking a greater interest in performance, SEO and architecture.

Next.js lets me bring frontend and backend together in a single environment, while benefiting from server-side rendering and the page generation features offered by the framework.

It’s gradually becoming one of my main web development tools.

    Engineering degree

    ECE Paris

After several years working independently, I’m complementing my practice with an engineering degree while continuing to work on my projects.

    Read the story

This degree complements my hands-on development experience with broader knowledge of computer science, mathematics and engineering: algorithms, systems architecture, electronics, networks and project management.

I’m focusing on a specialisation in Data and Artificial Intelligence for the rest of my studies.

    Starting my sole proprietorship

    First project: a nonprofit’s website

On March 1, 2024, I turn six years of personal projects into professional work.

    Read the story

After several years of developing my own projects and exploring much of the web ecosystem, I decide to make this experience professional. My first project is maintaining a nonprofit’s website.

It marks the transition from developing my own projects to developing for clients, with new constraints: understanding a need, working on an existing project, communicating, and delivering work intended for actual use.

    Freelance developer

    Alongside my studies · Paris

My first clients on Malt, followed by increasingly comprehensive projects — from the initial requirements through to maintenance.

    Read the story

I discover a new facet of the profession. It’s no longer just about knowing how to develop a feature, but about understanding what a client really needs and turning that request into a coherent technical solution: analysis, advice, estimates, quotes, design, deployment and post-delivery support.

I work on both existing projects and the design of new applications: showcase websites, content-managed websites, web applications, admin interfaces, business tools, APIs, authentication systems and transactional emails.

Working with different clients has taught me not to see development as simply carrying out a list of tasks. Where appropriate, I suggest functional, technical or UX improvements to make the product more aligned with the need it addresses.

    Pinz, an end-to-end product

    Social app for students

Product design, frontend, backend, infrastructure: the project that brings together pretty much everything I’ve learned since 2018.

    Read the story

Pinz is a social app designed to help students meet through events and activities.

On the product side: authentication, profiles, interactive map, events and RSVPs, relationships between users, referrals, organisations, targeted campaigns, dashboard, analytics, moderation, roles and permissions, notifications, transactional emails and Progressive Web App.

The project also covers everything around the code: architecture, data modelling, deployment, hosting, DNS, security, scheduled tasks, analytics and administration. The app launches in September 2026.

Today

Having started with the backend, then discovered the frontend and gradually the rest of the web ecosystem, I can approach a project as a whole rather than solely through its interface or its server. I can work across the entire chain:

  • Database
  • Infrastructure
